This Week's Interesting Read is from Maci Aurora

In the Shadow of a Wish
Maci Aurora
Publication date: April 26th 2022
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

In the Kingdom of Kaloma, women are forced to marry by the age of 26. It’s the law.

In the remote village of Sevens, at the northernmost point of the kingdom, there lives an impoverished family with four daughters and a son. Without the means to make love matches, the daughters are trapped by their circumstances.

When one daughter discovers a golden key deep in the Whitling Woods, it may have the power to change everything…

Auri Fareview, practical and realistic, does what she can to serve her family. When she finds a golden key that could be the answer she needs to save her sisters from the unjust Kaloma Marriage Laws, she discovers the treasure might be more than she bargained for. Enchanted, it doesn’t just come with a price attached, it’s also home to an imprisoned god, who wreaks havoc on her body, her heart, and her soul. And those aren’t practical matters. He has the power to break her.

Nixus Uraiahs has lost track of how long he’s been imprisoned by the spell on the key. There have been six key-keepers, all of whom have failed to break the spell to free him, and Nix knows he’s the reason why they haven’t. So, he will hold this 7th key-keeper accountable to the bargain of the spell: three wishes and a price for each. There’s no hope in her freeing him, however. Nix knows she’ll be like all the key-keepers who came before her. Except Auri approaches her wishes differently than any of the others, and Nix begins to see her as more than just a key-keeper. She intrigues him, proving her strength, surprising him, and enchanting him. Though he’s entrapped by the enchantment placed on the key, Nix realizes his heart is at risk of being captured by the seventh key-keeper. That is a risk he can’t afford to take knowing his villainy is just a single wish away.

EXCERPT:

“The Spelled Ribbon”

“You love your family?”

“Fervently.” She started walking again.

He knew he shouldn’t but asked anyway, “Would you tell me about them?” He followed her, a few steps behind.

“What would you like to know?”

Everything, he thought, but didn’t give it the substance of his voice. “Your parents?”

“Scarlett and Tomas Fareview.”

“They must be amazing.”

“Why would you say that.”

Flustered, Nix turned to smell a flower. “Well…” He stretched the sound, trying to find a reason that didn’t start with because you’re amazing, which would sound like a lie, and ended up saying, “You are unique.”

She grinned. “Unique. I like it. Yes. They are amazing. They met, fell in love, and settled in Sevens. That’s the village where we live.”

“You smile when you talk about them.”

“Well, they are… my life,” she said and continued walking. “I have three older sisters. Jessamine is the oldest, then Tarley and Brinna.” She looked over her shoulder at him and smiled. It was a different kind of smile, unguarded. He could see it was because she was talking about her family. “Then me. And I have one brother, Mattias. He’s the youngest.”

“And how old is Mattias as the youngest?”

“Eighteen.”

He considered the state of her skirt and boots when he’d met her. “And you all live together in Sevens?”

She nodded.

“How old is your oldest sister?”

“Jessamine? Twenty-seven.”

“And no one has left?” Nix thought this strange.

She shook her head and continued walking. “It isn’t because we are opposed to the idea, but with respect to marriage, none of us want anything less than what our parents have. Our parents adore one another. The other factor is that living in Sevens—and my parents’ refusal to leave it—has made it difficult to meet anyone and to make a living to find the means to leave.” She stopped under an archway where peach roses grew over to the other side, reaching out to touch one.

Nixus noticed a red ribbon tied around her wrist. It would have seemed an insignificant trifle, except it was wrapped with a swirl of golden magic. “What is this?” He reached out and touched the ribbon with a finger. The magic kissed his skin with a warm caress. Positive magic as opposed to the alternative, which heightened Nix’s curiosity.

Auri looked surprised by his touch, her eyes jumping from where he’d touched her to his face. That blush he liked worked its own magic against her skin, and she grabbed ahold of her wrist. “This? A gift from my mother. Just a ribbon. She gave each of us one.” She paused, then added, “We don’t have a lot of extra, not with seven of us. It’s just a ribbon–”

“It appears to be more than that–”

She tilted her head, and her brows bunched. “What do you mean?”

Nix could tell she didn’t know it was spelled, and just by looking at it, he couldn’t tell what it was for. As far as he knew, Auri’s mother had taken it to a local witch who’d cast a protection spell for each of her children. He didn’t remark on the magic and instead said, “It’s obviously very important to you. That makes it a very special ribbon.”

She smiled, looking away, and twisted the ribbon around her wrist. “Yes. You’re right.” She started back down the path.

This week's Interesting Read

The Reluctant Bride
Monica Murphy
Published by: Dangerous Press
Publication date: April 19th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Everyone’s for sale, including me. One moment I’m the forgotten daughter of one of the most wealthy families in the country, and the next I’m the blushing bride in an arranged marriage. My fate is sealed in my wedded union with a complete stranger.

In public, Perry Constantine is the life of the party. Easygoing. Adored. In private, he’s brooding. Dark. Angry. But so am I. It’s a contest of wills to see who will break in the bedroom first, and while I try to remain strong, I find myself craving the very man I swore to hate.

My husband.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks / Google Play

EXCERPT:

“Good morning,” I say as I take a step back from my mother’s embrace. Can’t linger too long or Winny will say something snide and rude.

He doesn’t say a word beyond a nod of acknowledgement at my arrival. His expression is stern, yet impassive. I never know what he’s thinking, and it’s disconcerting. I’ve learned from that though, and do my damnedest to wear the same expression when I’m dealing with Halcyon business for Win.

Or when I’m trying to get out of a sticky situation with a woman. That happens more often than I care to admit.

“Have a seat, darling,” Mother says, indicating the chair on the other side of Winston. I do as she says, settling into the leather chair that’s more comfortable than the one I sit in at my desk every damn day. “How was your weekend?”

I can’t tell her it was full of debauchery that included too much alcohol and too many women, but I avoid the paparazzi at the more popular clubs to keep it under wraps.

Instead I smile at her and say, “It was fine.”

Winston snorts. I’m sure he knows what I was up to. Wonder if he misses it. If I had his hot wife to come home to every evening, I wouldn’t miss that lifestyle at all.

“That’s nice.” Mother smiles, revealing straight white teeth that nearly blind me. Looks like someone just visited the dentist. “I hear you’ve been given new projects at Halcyon.”

I chance a look at Winston but he’s not paying attention to us. Too busy tapping away on his phone.

“I have.” I try to tamp down my excitement before my brother calls me out for behaving like a hyperactive puppy. “I’m handling all the angry calls that come into the office.”

Mother frowns. “Angry calls?”

I nod. “We piss off a lot of people in this city. There’s a lot of damage control going on. And not always of the—violent variety.”

The knowing look on her face is obvious. She’s just as ruthless as Winston. Swear to God that’s where he got it from, not Dad. Clearing his throat, Winston sits up straight, resting his arms on top of the table.

“Enough with the pleasantries. Let’s get down to business.”

“Winston,” Mother murmurs.

I frown at the both of them. “What exactly is this business we’re discussing this early in the morning anyway?”

Mother clears her throat as well, glancing over at Winston before she turns her attention on me. “It has to do with…you.”

I frown. “What about me?”

“Perry, darling. You’re not getting any younger.” Her expression is dour, as if she’s discussing something that displeases her. “It’s time for you to settle down.”

I snort. So does Winston.

“I’m only twenty-four,” I remind her. “Winston didn’t marry until he was forty.”

“Thirty-nine,” he corrects.

“Whatever,” I say to him, returning my attention to our mother. “There’s no one I want to settle down with anyway, so I can’t.”

“Ah, but you can.” Her smile is serene. “I’ve found someone for you, Perry. And you’re going to absolutely adore her.”

Wait a minute.

Back the fuck up

EXCERPT:

‘Did you even take your keys with you today?’ Sarah was still giggling as she placed her own keys on her allocated hook on the vintage hall stand that held an assortment of coats, hats and scarves. There was a hook for each of the flatmates and the idea was they would hang their keys to let the others know they were home. Heather’s bunch of keys and assorted keyrings hung in their normal place.

‘Lordy! I did leave them at home.’ Heather clapped her hand to her head.

‘Come on, I’ll put the kettle on and you start packing. When will Matt be here?’ Sarah shrugged out of her coat and started down the hall towards the kitchen, following the path illuminated by the living room light Heather flipped on.

‘About half an—’

Sarah flicked the kitchen light on, pausing as she waited for Heather to finish her sentence. Instead, a loud crash came from the front of the flat. Sarah dropped her bag and coat on the floor.

What in the…

She hurried back up the hallway. ‘Heather?’

‘You little bitch,’ shouted a distinctly Australian voice, its edges hard and rough.

Sarah’s skin prickled with heat and she raced the final steps to the living room. ‘Oh my God! Heather!’

Her flatmate was struggling against a tall, well-built man with an ugly raised scar above his left eye. Heather kicked out, the hand across her mouth already sporting bloody teeth marks. A second man, a little shorter than the first, stepped forward raising a gun.

Sarah screamed. We’re being robbed. Another horror ripped through her mind. Please, please, take the money and leave us alone.

‘Evening, love. Where’s your boyfriend?’ said the shorter man.

‘What?’ Sarah felt her legs turn to jelly as he grabbed her by the hair and pulled her into the living room, across from Heather and her captor.

‘We’re looking for Hollywood. Where is he?’

She’d never seen either of the men in her flat, but instinctively she knew who they were. Or rather, where they were from. Members of outlaw motorcycle clubs wore menace the same way they wore their colors. Her mind flashed back to the night she’d met Alex. He wore a leather cut with a skull and guns insignia on the back. A patch on the front left was embroidered with the name Hollywood.

The gun was jammed into her ribs. Sarah held her breath, the lack of oxygen disorienting like she was being dragged under the ocean, twisting and turning her until she no longer knew which way was up. Except for the searing pain where it felt as if her hair was being ripped from her head, and the gun punching a hole into her side.

‘Fuck!’

The tall man shoved Heather away, and she collapsed over the back of the sofa. Her foot must have connected hard with his shin as he hopped about for a second. He recovered and punched her hard in the face. Heather collapsed to the floor.

‘No!’ screamed Sarah.

Something crashed out in the hallway, then a hooded man plunged into the room, tackling the tall guy to the ground behind the sofa. Heather shrieked and tried to crawl out of the way. What the hell was going on?

‘Heather!’

‘Keep your mouth shut!’ The grip on Sarah’s hair grew stronger, the gun pushing so hard against her she was sure her ribs would snap.

The third man emerged from behind the sofa. His hood had slipped from his head. Sarah’s lungs burned and spots appeared before her eyes. She dragged in a breath that felt like razor blades going down her throat. She knew that hair, that face.

Alex.

Definitely need to check this one out... WOW.

King of Spades
Alta Hensley
(Dangerous Press)
Publication date: April 5th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Suspense

Nick Hudson has a dangerous reputation.

That’s what I need if I’m going to survive.

Desperation makes me seek out a ruthlessly powerful billionaire.

I need protection.

He demands my virtue as payment.

I’m falling into a world of luxury and sin.

With every twist and turn, I need more.

Except this is not a man to love.

This is a man to fear.

His obsession grows. So does the threat, until I’m trapped in a world of depravity. I’ll need more than Nick’s strength to survive. I’m going to need his heart.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

There is a fine line between obsession and addiction.

If you ask me which one I suffer from, I can’t give you a clear answer.

I’ve been obsessing over a man. The constant thoughts of him are addicting and I don’t try to fight them off. Obsession or addiction or both?

There has never been a man with this power over me before. But this man… he’s different.

Nick Hudson.

And not just thoughts of him, but also his private playground known as Wonderland.

I’ve always wanted to go, and after that night, four months ago, I am starving to see what lurks beneath the man even more. It was only one night, and yet, it had been the most all-consuming night of my life.

It had been a whirlwind of emotions, and as quickly as everything had happened, it ended. We had kissed. We had touched. He had dominated my body, and then left me wanting more. It was a wicked taste of him and his world, and I’d do anything to experience it again. I will experience it again.

Tonight.

“You look amazing,” Sasha Morelli says with a flick of her dark hair, and one last glance at her own appearance before she closes her compact mirror, placing and places it into her purse. “You’ll fit in perfectly at Wonderland.”

I somehow control my huff that struggles for an escape at her words. I’m good at hiding my feelings, my emotions, and I’ve become a master at the ‘fake it until you make it’ school of thought. But the harsh reality—my reality—is I’ll never truly fit in anywhere. Regardless of what I wear, how I do my hair, or where I go, fitting in is elusive and always will be.

Especially tonight—going to Wonderland. There is no way in hell I’ll ever belong in a place like that. But I sure as hell can act like I do.

Lawdawg is finally here!

Lawdawg
Marteeka Karland
(Black Reign MC, #7)
Publication date: March 25th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Eden: The first time I saw Grady Bassett was when Samson brought Charlotte home. Turned out my brother’s woman is Grady’s daughter. Naturally, the man’s focus wasn’t on some camgirl at a MC he had no desire to be around. When he finally does notice me, he can’t see me for my position within the club — a woman who has sex on camera for strangers. But I noticed him… and I’m a woman who knows what she wants.

Lawdawg: Eden’s the most naturally sexy woman I’ve ever seen. Sure, I’d been worried sick about my daughter, but the second the danger to her was past, I became obsessed with Eden. I even downloaded every one of her videos. Which meant I binge watched. I gave Samson hell for wanting my daughter when he’s so much older, but now I’m in the same position. I need to let her go, to be the better man. But now I know Eden has an online stalker. He knows where she lives and who her friends are. Black Reign is compromised, so I reached out Cain at Bones MC. She might be young enough to be my daughter, but she’s still mine. No one will ever harm her. This stalker will have to go through me to even get close.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

She answered on the first ring. “Hey there, Lawdawg. How’s it hangin’?” She hiccuped slightly at the end and giggled.

“Are you… are you drunk?”

“Well, yeah. It’s a party, you know. We’re all drunk.”

“Great,” I muttered. “Just fuckin’ great.” I scrubbed a hand over my face but continued. “Listen to me, Eden. Go to Samson. You’re in danger. There’s a guy stalking you.”

“Sinner58? Yeah. I know. He’s running off all my good followers.” She sounded like she was pouting.

“You knew about this?” Anger was starting to build inside me. Anger. Aggression. I wanted to take her over my knee and paddle her like the child she was.

“Of course, I knew! He’s been bullying my regulars for weeks. It’s just that it must have stepped up in the last few days, because my followers are leaving now instead of merely waiting until the next show.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“Nope.” No further explanation.

“Of course, you didn’t.” I let out an exasperated breath. “Look. Just stay put. This guy knows where you are and how to get to you. I’m headed that way.”

“Oh, you are, huh?”

“Eden…” I tried to inject as much warning as I could. Anyone else would have tripped all over themselves to do his bidding. Eden? Not so much.

“What do you plan on doing when you get here?”

“I’m lockin’ that place down with you in it!”

“Oh, really?”

“I don’t have time to argue with you, Eden,” I snapped, beginning to get really angry now. Well, angry but more frustrated. She wasn’t taking this seriously at all. Hadn’t in all the time she knew about it.

“You don’t?” I sensed a trap but had no idea what it might be. “Well, what if I did this…” There was a pause before my phone signaled I had a text. I pulled it up and there was a selfie of Eden. Her exquisite tits on fine display. “Or this.” The next image she sent had a man sucking at one of those tits. Something inside me just… snapped. I felt like something inside my head that was primitive and territorial roared to the front and demanded I claim that woman. She was mine. No one else’s. It didn’t seem to matter she was young enough to be my daughter or that my late wife was probably rolling over in her grave because of the girl’s age. I needed her and had every intention of taking her with me. I could tell myself it was to keep her safe, but the pure and simple fact was, I just fucking wanted her.

Author Bio:

Romance author by night, emergency room tech/clerk by day, Marteeka Karland works really hard to drive everyone in her life completely and totally nuts. She has been creating stories from her warped imagination since she was in the third grade. Her love of writing blossomed throughout her teenage years until it developed into the totally unorthodox and irreverent style her English teachers tried so hard to rid her of. Now, she breathes life into faeries, space hunters, werewolves, vampires, shapeshifters, and a few just plane ole ordinary people. She loves to see the awkward, self-conscious band geek get the captain of the football team and make him beg for it.
